Tankwa Trek is newly becoming know as one of the top classed UCI stage races on the calendar after having extended the number of days from 3 to 4 since last year. The line up is easy the best stacked field this side of the EPIC and is touted as the mini epic amongst the pro riders due to the lineup and fierceness of racing. The edition of a number of European teams to the line up makes for some exciting racing for our South African teams who can really adjudge how the reparation is going before EPIC, especially whit the likes of the current world marathon champ, ex 4 times world marathon champ, cape epic winners, world U23 world champ, commonwealth champ, Olympic MTB medallists and the list goes on. The start line is often mistaken for the start of a world CUP with the number of national Jerseys on display. The start list was quiet intimidating to say the least but the DarkhorseWheels/TIB team held its own brilliantly to finish 9th on toughest stage and 3rd South African team home on that day. Shaun-Nick and Andrew raced with all they could give and considering a big peloton crash on day 2 along and then on the last day some testing stomach issues they finished extremely well off in a fully stacked field in 11th place and 4th South African team after 4 days.
The teams equipment was “on-point” with the DH all mountain 35mm wheels not missing a beat on the Momsen Ultra bikes being perfectly suited for the super rocky and harsh conditions.
This weekend the team will be up in JHB for the Route 66 3 day stage race and hopefully begin the final preparation into the Cape Epic count down of 5 weeks to go.
