Following on from a win last weekend, TIB athlete Andrew Hill fought hard for a 2nd place in the next instalment of the Roag series at the Compendium Derby. Hill broke away with the ReCM trio of Woolcock, Luus and Klienhans to secure the 2nd step of the podium in a hotly contested and fast paced race.
“The pace up the first climb was fast and we dropped the rest of the field with Laurens and Erik at the front” commented Hill, “I found myself up with the ReCM guys and knew I would have to push very hard or take a huge risk to ride away from them at some stage”
Hill who is a Hillcrest local said riding on home turf gave him somewhat of an upper hand when it came to local knowledge and route but the organisers still managed to find new tracks for the racers and riders. “I knew a lot of the trails and sections having lived in the area for a while but I was still amazed at how Nic Floris put the route together and meshed a very solid and enjoyable track” Added Hill.
The technical nature of the track was well received by many of the riders who only had praise for the course and overall flow. “The tight section into GIBA was great and this was where Laurens and myself got away from Waylon… This was where I could really feel knowing the route was a huge advantage to me” said Hill
Hill and Luus set a fast pace out of GIBA up to the M13 single track section where Luus attacked with a big effort to dislodge Hill. “I just couldn’t stick to his (Laurens) wheel and he got a big enough on me to brake the elastic band” I fought hard to ride back onto his wheel but I just didn’t have enough in the legs… having to settle for a 2nd place”
A two times previous winner of the Compendium Classic Hill placed himself back onto the leader board of the Roag series with his 2nd place overall and 1st Subvet category. The 9 race series continues next month with the SAFIRE Banesfield classic where many of the riders will look to gain valuable points for their positions in the log.
